The story of Village Hymns
How a group of worship leaders writing for their community sparked a movement.
HOW IT STARTED
Village Hymns began in 2015 with a small group of worship leaders meeting together in South Florida. As we got to know each other, a common theme emerged — we had each individually written worship songs to fit our church context and started to sing them alongside mainstream worship songs and hymns at our church services.
As we started to write together, we discovered specific themes rising from the South Florida pulpits and church communities that needed to be put into song. Our passion grew to create music for our community, so we opened God’s word, listened to our church communities, and started to write and lead our songs in our churches.
As we continued to meet, we began to lead each others’ worship songs in our own churches — and the songs resonated. To celebrate, we released these songs on our album Songs of Our City, compiled of collaborative work from 20 local worship leaders.
HOW IT’S GOING
In the past few years, we’ve hosted 50 CREATE workshops, teaching songwriting mechanics and co-writing with other musicians from all different denominations. These writing groups have served as a space for multi-church collaboration, have broken down comparison and competition, and have given us a spirit of unity in our local area.
In Fall of 2020, we launched a Village Hymns Cohort, focusing on soul care and personal revival in the hearts of worship leaders. Our desire is to see worship leaders lead from a place of strength — this means learning rhythms of rest, growing in community, and feeling empowered in creativity. Our third Village Hymns cohort kicked off in the Fall of 2022.
Today, Village Hymns is composed of 150 worship leaders from 54 different churches, and we’re currently working on our fifth album.
Village Hymns longs to see vibrant worship fuel a revival in South Florida. We want God’s kingdom to come and awaken His church. We can’t wait to play a part in the story God is writing for South Florida churches.
